Some critics relate his prose to the New Sincerity and New Realism literary movements. Very funny at times, very babylonn at others. He first senses this hidden purpose when reading about Mesopotamian religious practices.
I enjoyed reading Homo Zapiens, and I only found it draggy and mindlessly focused at times. Pelevin’s book might be better had he and I shared so many of the cultural references to which he points babjlon his book.

This artistic dilemma is also by implication that of Pelevin himself: No trivia or quizzes yet. Although each secondary character occasionally appears in different segments of the book, each of them bears special functions and represents a whole concept behind their figures. The first few chapters of Babylon have a great deal of fun with Takarsky’s work. Most novels of great style, written quality, and characterization, are easy to follow.
Overall, this book can be both a very sagacious depiction of the recent historical events and just a collection of jokes that help to take a look at a very tough 90s and give praises to God that they are gone. If I did speak Russian, though, who knows?
Man is wow to man. This might be a good way to make me, an American ignorant of the conditions of Russia at the time, understand the writer’s frustrations, but it isn’t the best way to write a story. When one envies and admires the way a TV character displays wealth or “class” the former is displaying what Pelevin calls oral wow-factor.
