The first few chapters of Babylon have a great deal of fun with Takarsky’s work. Most novels of great style, written quality, and characterization, are easy to follow.

Overall, this book can be both a very sagacious depiction of the recent historical events and just a collection of jokes that help to take a look at a very tough 90s and give praises to God that they are gone. If I did speak Russian, though, who knows?


Man is wow to man. This might be a good way to make me, an American ignorant of the conditions of Russia at the time, understand the writer’s frustrations, but it isn’t the best way to write a story. When one envies and admires the way a TV character displays wealth or “class” the former is displaying what Pelevin calls oral wow-factor.
