As some of the layers are peeled back on the murder that readers will have solved much, much, earlierthere are again some really great, vivid caricatures that lend fun and validity back into Burdett’s hyper-sensualized Bangkok. Burdett is adept at playing with mysteryin every sense of the word, wreaking a subtle mischief on reader expectations.

There is much made of the traffic in Bangkok. Sonchai mentions that he is a fan of Raymond Chandler and Philip Marlowe. You figure out the details of the crime as you read, but more importantly, you understand WHY things happen.

I enjoyed the main character, Sonchai, and was sympathetic with his desire to avenge the death of his partner, but most of the other characters were either stereotypical or offensive. Among the witnesses are the only two cops in the city not on the take, but within moments one is murdered and his partner, Sonchai Jitpleecheep – a devout Buddhist and the son of a Thai bar girl and a long-gone Vietnam War G. Although he has taken a religious pledge to refuse bribes, he is bent on revenging his beloved partner, Pichai, who was killed by a cobra at the scene of the crime.
